Major League Baseball

  • If you talk to people around here, or at least in the New York part of around here, they will insist that the American League Championship Series that begins tonight between the Houston Astros and the New York Yankees is a clear case of good vs. evil. That the Yankees somehow represent righteousness juxtaposed to the sinners in Houston who should continue to repent for past sins. That this series that will decide who represents the American League in the World Series is less about athletic prowess and more about divine justice, as if the Lord may actually tip the scale in extra innings.
  • Jim Kaat was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on July 24, in Cooperstown, New York after being elected by the Golden Days Era Committee. He played 15 seasons for the Minnesota Twins and he wears the Twins cap on his plaque that hangs in the hall. Kaat pitched for a total of five organizations in a 25 year run in the majors, winning 283 games, 16 Gold Glove awards as the best fielder at his position in the major leagues, mostly with the Minnesota Twins. He also played for the Chicago White Sox, the Philadelphia Phillies, the New York Yankees, and the St. Louis Cardinals. He was part of the 1982 World Series championship there 40 years ago. He was with us a few months ago, but a lot has happened since then he is now an inducted member into the Baseball Hall of Fame. His new book "Good as Gold: My Eight Decades in Baseball" is a hit.

  • Of all the things I don’t understand in sports, high amongst them are diehard baseball fans who watch all 162 regular season games of their favorite team. These people exist, and in surprisingly large number, and I swear they feel like another species. There’s both the sheer time commitment involved – multiply 162 times three hours – and the reality that the vast majority of any baseball game involves little to no activity. I honestly feel like watching a full season of baseball is like making someone eat an entire wedding cake. At some point, it becomes work.
