The Guthrie Center holds the Grand Opening of the “Check it Out” musical instrument loan library on Wednesday, January 10 from 3:00-6:00 p.m. at 2 Van Deusenville Road, Great Barrington. Designed to serve people of all ages and all instrument experience levels in Berkshire County, MA, the collection offers a variety of instruments from strings to drums to electric keyboards. People can borrow for up to 30 days free of charge. The backup snow date will be January 17.
“Musical instruments should be played, not displayed,” said George Laye, Guthrie Center Director of Development and Founder/Director of the instrument loan program. “We are excited to imagine that future Beethovens or Beatles might emerge from our program and not fall through the cracks. Whether a beginner or professional, in school or retired, there’s an instrument for you.”

The musical instrument loan program reflects Guthrie Center founder Arlo Guthrie’s commitment to meeting the needs of the community and supporting cultural preservation and educational achievement.
Through the generosity of donors, the Center has built a wonderful collection over the years. “Not everyone or every family can afford to rent or buy an instrument or is sure if they’ll stick with it,” said Laye. The lending program encourages fun and learning without any financial burden to borrowers.
The Prosendale Series presents Trail Mix: Hudson Valley Nature Writers on Sunday, April 28 at 3:00 pm. Multimedia event featuring readings (Akiko Busch, Leslie T. Sharpe, Nina Shengold, Gail Straub), film (Derek Dellinger), original art work (Kate McGloughlin), and live music (Tim Kapeluck and Geoffrey Harden). Admission by donation; $10 suggested. April showers, May flowers, or both? Whatever the weather may bring on Sunday, April 28 at 3pm, the Rosendale Theatre will give nature lovers a splendid excuse to come indoors. “Trail Mix: Hudson Valley Nature Writers” continues the Prosendale reading series (produced by Joyce Sprafkin), with a literary celebration of our magnificent mountains, waters, and trails.
The six featured authors hail from across the region. Acclaimed naturalist Leslie T. Sharpe (The Quarry Fox) makes her home in the Great Western Catskills. Artist/poet Kate McGloughlin and award-winning author Gail Straub (Solace and Sanctuary) and host/co-producer Nina Shengold (Reservoir Year) live three stones’ throws from the glorious Ashokan Reservoir, which they will celebrate as a trio. Essayist and river swimmer Akiko Busch (How To Disappear, Nine Ways to Cross a River) lives on the Hudson River’s eastern shore, as does author/photographer Derek Dellinger, whose new book The Joy of Winter Hiking joins a long trail of popular outdoor guidebooks.
“Trail Mix” will add a multimedia dimension with a short film by Dellinger, original art by McGloughlin, and live music by singer-songwriter Tim Kapeluck with Geoffrey Harden on fiddle and bass. There will also be a reception with complimentary refreshments and book signings by the participants. Trail mix snacks generously donated by High Falls Food Co-op.

A festival of modern dance featuring the Choreography of Linda Diamond, the inheritor of Anna Sokolow's prestigious work.The Linda Diamond and Company annual Woodstock Dance and Music Festival will take place on Sunday, April 28th at 3:30 PM. The price is $20 or by contribution.
The show will feature a variety of music and modern dance, and will include performances by Jeeno Joseph, a Bharatanatyam Dancer, and the premiere of a new collaboration between Linda Diamond and Woodstock composer Tom Desisto entitled “Hymn to the Earth”.
The Greater Liberty Chamber of Commerce and Big Sky Productions will present a Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre titled Sam Club Private Eye and the "Case of the Motor Coach Murder" on Sunday, April 28 at the Liberty Diner & Restaurant. When a bus load of senior citizens on their way to a casino gets stranded because their group leader gets murdered, it's up to the audience to figure which of the remaining characters is guilty. Explore the captivating worlds of mystery and wonder in this exhibition featuring highlights from the Norman Rockwell Museum’s Permanent Collection, which now holds almost 25,000 illustrations by prominent artists working across genres and time periods.
Specific selections include Teresa Fasolino’s colorful, clue-filled mystery novel cover illustrations; Thomas Woodruff’s ethereal book jacket art for best-selling novels by Anne Tyler and Gabriel García Márquez; lighthearted visual puns for Stewart Edelstein’s Dubious Doublets by James Grashow; luminous watercolors for The Wizard of Oz and other stories by Thea Kliros; steamy pulp illustrations by Everett Raymond Kinstler and Mort Kunstler; mystical three-dimensional illustrations for books and magazines by Joan Hall; fictional American histories by Julian Allen; a fun and engaging Rockwell Who-Dun-It; and a brand new Rockwell acquisition that offers mysteries of its own.
On March 9 from 5:00-7:00pm, join us for a Members Reception for the new spring exhibition, Mystery and Wonder: Highlights from the Illustration Collection.
