The Kennedy Center Honors has named its 2015 class and it includes a person known from the Berkshires to Boston and beyond. The 13th music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and namesake of a 1,200-seat concert hall on the Tanglewood grounds, Seiji Ozawa is one of six Kennedy Center honorees announced Wednesday. Friend and BSO managing director Mark Volpe says the award is an affirmation of Ozawa’s conducting and educational contributions.
“Imagine a 10-year-old of war-torn Japan coming and being the music director of arguably one of the most important orchestras in the world, the Boston Symphony, that’s quite a story,” said Volpe.
The Eagles, George Lucas, Carole King, Rita Moreno and Cicely Tyson are the other recipients.
The awards gala will broadcast on CBS December 29th.
