Peru, Massachusetts has given Charter Communications preliminary approval to supply broadband internet to the town.

On Saturday, local voters advised the Select Board to pursue talks with the Massachusetts Broadband Institute and the state Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development to bring broadband internet to town using Charter Communications.

The decision to engage with Charter Communications – rather than build a town-run fiber-optic network – effectively breaks a Select Board tie.

Peru is one of 19 towns in Berkshire County getting help from those state agencies to expand broadband. The undertaking would cost Peru roughly $1.8 million – $700,000 of which would be provided by the state.
