Today we learn about the work of the Saratoga Senior center. Since 1955 the mission of the Saratoga Senior Center is to empower seniors to achieve and maintain personal independence and individual well-being by providing the program structure and support services necessary for healthy recreation, companionship, social involvement, and problem solving.

Lois Celeste is the Executive Director of Saratoga Senior Center - starting her 11th year with the agency.

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany is one of the largest, private, social service agencies in the region, helping more than 89,000 people each year in the fourteen counties of the Albany Diocese. This week, we learn about Children at the Well, a Capital Region organization that seeks to build community and grow leaders by increasing the capacity for understanding through the ancient art of storytelling.

On January 12, Children at The Well will hold an evening of stories and songs called “Winter Lights” to benefit the Children at the Well and the Interfaith Story Circle programs.

CEO - The Commission on Economic Opportunity is a community action agency with a mission of helping people in the community that are dealing with poverty. Its largest programs are Head Start, Universal Pre-K, WIC, Weatherization services and a large food pantry.

Founded in 1969, The Free School is the longest running inner-city independent alternative school in the United States. The school provides an alternative to traditional models of education by offering children a self-directed approach to their learning. We are joined by Director of The Albany Free School Deirdre Kelly and educator, EPIC program director and Free School Radio Executive Producer Gerald Malcolm.

This morning our featured organization is the Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region, Inc. – a non-profit organization that seeks to encourage knowledge of the Underground Railroad Movement and its genesis and legacy in the Capital Region and in New York State – and as a significant element of the history of the United States.

We were joined by Paul and Mary Liz Stewart, Co-founders of Underground Railroad History Project and Scholars-in-Residence at Russell Sage College.

Since 1985, the Community Loan Fund of the Capital Region has loaned more than $61 million and leveraged more than $218 million for equitable economic development in the Capital Region. The organization provides low-cost/no-cost trainings to help entrepreneurs get started. Training workshops cover financial planning, branding and marketing, legal issues, insurance, payroll and HR, and more. Community Loan Fund has launched a new online training platform aimed at minority and women owned businesses and is working to expand its Business Incubator.

We learn more from Executive Director of the Community Loan Fund of the Capital Region Linda MacFarlane; Board Member of the Community Loan Fund of the Capital Region Louise McNeilly; Molly Belmont director of community relations and development; and owner of The Hat Boutique Ethel Walker. The Hat Boutique is located at the Community Loan Fund incubator at 255 Orange Street in Albany, New York.
