Westchester Legislators Approve Bill For Federal Housing Settlement

In New York, Westchester County legislators have approved legislation as part of a federal 2009 fair and affordable housing settlement.

The Westchester County Board of Legislators Monday night approved so-called Source of Income legislation banning discrimination against potential renters and home buyers. The legislation was a modified version of the legislation submitted by Republican County Executive Rob Astorino to legislators in April. Astorino had said he would sign the legislation if the Board adopted it, after U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara threatened action if the county executive failed to do so. The one modification to the bill was to exempt landlords and owners of one property of six or fewer units. Astorino has previously said his objection to the legislation is turning the Section 8 voluntary program concerning vouchers to supplement the rent of low-income residents into a mandatory program.
