Public Hearing Is Set For Westchester Affordable Housing Legislation

Legislators in Westchester County will hold a public hearing next week. It’s part of a process to meet federal demands regarding a 2009 fair and affordable housing settlement. A spokesman for the county executive has said it is the county’s position that it is in compliance with the settlement.

The Westchester County Board of Legislators Wednesday approved a resolution to set a public hearing on County Executive Rob Astorino’s so-called Source of Income legislation. Astorino had sent the legislation to legislators last week, saying he would sign it if the Board adopted it, after U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara threatened action if the county executive failed to do so. The Board of Legislators passed such legislation in June 2010, but Astorino vetoed it, and has maintained his opposition to the measure. Democratic Board of Legislators Chairman Ken Jenkins says he will schedule a committee meeting to discuss and possibly modify the bill before full Board consideration. Astorino had also sent a resolution for the public hearing, which is Monday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m.
