Golf:
Jordan Spieth has become just the fourth golfer since 1960 to win the Masters and U.S. Open in the same year. Spieth birdied the final hole for a 1-under 69 and a 5-under total, one stroke ahead of Dustin Johnson and Louis Oosthuizen. Johnson had a 12-foot putt for eagle on the final hole to win the tournament, but he three-putted for par to finish in a second-place tie at Chambers Bay.
MLB:
In baseball, in the American League, Detroit bested the Yankees 12-4, Boston topped Kansas City 13-2, Baltimore defeated Toronto 13-9, Cleveland slid past Tampa Bay 1-0, the White Sox edged Texas 3-2 in 13 innings, Oakland won against the Angels 3-2, and it was Houston over Seattle 6-2.
In the National League, Atlanta slid past the Mets 1-0, Philadelphia beat St. Louis 9-2, Washington won against Pittsburgh 9-2, Cincinnati defeated Miami 5-2, Colorado topped Milwaukee 10-4, Arizona bested San Diego 7-2, and it was the Dodgers over San Francisco 10-2.
In interleague play, the Cubs blanked Minnesota 8-0.
Yankees right-hander Sergio Santos is going to have season-ending Tommy John surgery. The Yankees made the announcement about Santos yesterday, two days after the oft-injured reliever was placed on the disabled list with elbow inflammation. The club also announced that left-hander Jacob Lindgren will have a bone spur removed from his elbow.
WNBA:
In the WNBA, New York beat Atlanta 73-64, Connecticut topped Los Angeles 76-68, Tulsa won against Minnesota 86-78, and it was Phoenix over Seattle 84-72.
World Cup:
Australia, France and Canada have advanced to the Women's World Cup quarterfinals by winning on Sunday. Substitute Kyah Simon scored off a rebound in the 80th minute to lift Australia to its first Women's World Cup knockout win, a 1-0 upset of Brazil. Marie Laure Delie scored twice as France beat South Korea 3-0 before Josee Belanger tallied in the 52nd minute to lift Canada over Switzerland 1-0.
Tennis:
Roger Federer and Andy Murray tuned up for Wimbledon with grass court tournament wins. Federer beat Italy's Andreas Seppi 7-6, 6-4 to claim his record eighth Gerry Weber Open title. Murray had to work overtime on Sunday to get his fourth title at the Queen's Club tournament, knocking off Viktor Troicki in the rain-delayed semifinal before posting a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Kevin Anderson.
Australian Grand Prix:
Nico Rosberg overtook pole sitter Lewis Hamilton on the first turn and went on to win the Austrian Grand Prix. Hamilton finished second. Rosberg's third win this season took his career tally to 11, and cut Hamilton's overall lead to 10 points.
Olympics:
A special City Council panel overseeing Boston's 2024 Summer Olympics bid will be looking at venue locations and financing for the international event. The meeting at City Hall on Friday comes as Olympics organizers promise to unveil updated plans by June 30th. Organizers say they will provide more details about costs and the event's two central facilities: the Olympic stadium and athletes' village.
Western Massachusetts economic development officials are hoping for Olympics venues if Boston becomes host for the 2024 games. Former Westfield Mayor Richard Sullivan is head of the Western Massachusetts Economic Development Council. He tells the Republican newspaper that the area has a good chance to host preliminary-round basketball games.
NCAA:
Two University of Missouri athletes were injured when their car flipped in Columbia on Sunday. A University of Missouri Hospital spokeswoman said defensive lineman Harold Brantley was in serious condition Sunday evening, and women's basketball player Madeleine Stock was treated and released.
