NASCAR:
Tony Stewart will now start focusing on next weekend's NASCAR race in Richmond, Virginia. His return to the track Sunday night ended only a little over halfway through his race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Stewart hit the wall twice. He skipped three NASCAR Sprint Cup races after his car struck and killed a fellow driver in upstate New York. Meanwhile, Kasey Kahne earned his first Sprint Cup win of the season, grabbing the lead on a restart with 23 laps remaining before holding off Matt Kenseth in a two-lap shootout. Both Kahne and Kenseth earned spots in the Chase for the Championship. Denny Hamlin was third, followed by Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards and Danica Patrick.
MLB:
In Major League Baseball, in the American League, Toronto topped the Yankees 4-3 yesterday. Boston blanked Tampa Bay 3-0. Clay Buchholz threw a three-hitter to stop his string of seven starts without a win. He walked none and struck out six. Only one runner reached second base during his second shutout this season and sixth of his career. Elsewhere Baltimore bested Minnesota 12-8, the White Sox tripled up Detroit 6-2, Houston beat Texas 3-2, the Angels bested Oakland 8-1 in a four-game sweep for a five game lead over the A’s, and the Cleveland vs Kansas City game was suspended at 4-2 in the 10 inning due to rain. Kansas City still leads a half-game over Detroit in the AL Central.
In the National League, the Mets edged Philadelphia 6-5, Cincinnati beat Pittsburgh 3-2, St. Louis defeated the Cubs 9-6 tying the Brewers for the lead in NL Central, San Francisco blew out Milwaukee 15-5, Arizona topped Colorado 6-2, the Dodgers beat San Diego 7-1, and it was Atlanta over Miami 1-0.
In interleague play, Seattle beat Washington 5-3.
Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia was out of the starting lineup yesterday, one day after leaving a game because of concussion-like symptoms. Brock Holt replaced Pedroia for yesterday's game against Tampa Bay.
Tennis – U.S. Open:
Second seed Roger Federer, sixth seed Thomas Berdych and No. 7 Grigor Dimitrov have advanced to the fourth round of the U.S. Open by winning on Sunday, but fourth seed David Ferrer lost to No. 29 Gilles Simon and 12th seed Richard Gasquet fell to Gael Monfils. Women's 10th seed Caroline Wozniacki moved into the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam event for the first time in two years by ousting No. 5 Maria Sharapova in three sets. No. 13 Sara Errani also reached the quarters, but ninth seed Jelena Jankovic and No. 14 Lucie Safarova were beaten.
NFL:
Multiple media outlets are reporting that Quarterback Alex Smith has signed a four year contract extension with the Kansas City Chiefs worth approximately $68 million.
Police in Northern California say San Francisco 49er Ray McDonald has been arrested on domestic violence charges. San Jose police says the 29-year-old defensive end was taken into custody early Sunday morning after officers responded to a home in an upscale neighborhood. The arrest comes days after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced tougher penalties last week for players accused of domestic violence.
The New England Patriots have traded quarterback Ryan Mallett to the Houston Texans. The move means second-round draft choice Jimmy Garoppolo will be the backup to two-time MVP Tom Brady. Mallett will back up Harvard product Ryan Fitzpatrick in Houston.
Horse Racing:
Longtime announcer Tom Durkin called his last game on Sunday after a 25-year long career announcing races at Saratoga Race Course. Local leaders including Joanne Yepsen and Congressman Paul Tonko honored the announcer. He will be back Monday to sign autographs, take pictures, and greet fans.
Condo Commando shot through an opening on the inside out of the gate and splashed home a 13¼-length winner of the Grade 1 $350,000 Spinaway Sunday at Saratoga Race Course.
It was the second straight victory under jockey Joe Bravo for the 2-year-old filly, who ran seven furlongs on a sloppy main track for trainer Rudy Rodriguez.
Car Racing:
A spokesman for a Connecticut track says a man who crashed in a race of vintage cars is the first death in the historic-racing festival's 32-year history. Authorities say 73-year-old Lee Duran, of Lyme, lost control of his car and crashed on Saturday at Lime Rock Park during a race of pre-World War II cars. No other cars were involved.
NCAAF:
In Top-25 College Football, No. 10 Baylor shut out Southern Methodist 45-0.
WNBA:
In the WNBA, Minnesota bested Phoenix 82-77.
