From The Archives: 'Me And Mario' Recorded Morning After 2000 Election

Many tributes to former New York Governor Mario Cuomo, who died Thursday age 82, have focused on the Democrat's three terms in office. But Cuomo remained a key political commentator, author and observer well after leaving office in 1995, captured in weekly interviews with WAMC's Dr. Alan Chartock. One compelling show was recorded the morning after the contested presidential election of 2000 between Al Gore and George Bush, when the governor told Chartock he had fallen asleep in his chair watching news coverage at 3 a.m.

Dr. Alan Chartock is professor emeritus at the University at Albany. He hosts the weekly Capitol Connection series, heard on public radio stations around New York. The program, for almost 12 years, highlighted interviews with Governor Mario Cuomo and now continues with conversations with state political leaders. Dr. Chartock also appears each week on The Media Project and The Roundtable and offers commentary on Morning Edition, weekdays at 7:40 a.m.
