Gun rights activists plan to gather in Pittsfield Friday to protest Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey’s crackdown on so-called copycat assault weapons. The Gun Owners’ Action League is holding a rally at Pittsfield’s Park Square at 5 o’clock. Jim Wallace is the group’s executive director.
“The attorney general has singlehandedly, overnight created hundreds of thousands of what we now call ‘felons in waiting,’” Wallace said in response to Healey’s July announcement. “She has now declared that all of the things that we have done in the past, in conjunction with the state, are now deemed illegal.”
Healey says more than 10,000 assault weapons altered by manufacturers and marketed as Massachusetts compliant were sold in the state last year. Last month, the Democrat announced a crackdown on sales of these weapons saying she was not creating new regulations and would not go after people who bought the guns believing they were legal.
