Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.)

Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy returned from a five-day trip to the Middle East earlier this week. He discussed the Iran nuclear agreement, the Syrian refugee crisis and other issues during a conference call with reporters Tuesday.Having announced his support for the Iran nuclear agreement in early August, Murphy says he is pleased to stand with fellow Connecticut Democrat, Senator Richard Blumenthal, who issued his support Tuesday. During his trip, Murphy visited a refugee camp in Jordan where he says 80,000 people displaced by the Syrian civil war are living.

“That camp is a hellhole,” Murphy said. “That camp is no place that anyone should have to live for more than a handful of weeks and months. We have been warehousing Syrians there for years. At a clip of almost 250 a day they are returning to Syria because they have absolutely given up hope.”

Murphy says America’s credibility in the Middle East is at stake if the country doesn’t increase humanitarian aid including accepting at least 50,000 refugees.
