The Republican candidate for Massachusetts lieutenant governor stopped in Pittsfield Tuesday to meet with area Republicans one week before the state primary.Karyn Polito, a state representative from Worcester County who served in the Statehouse from 2001 to 2011 is running with Charlie Baker as he tries to take the governor’s seat after losing to Democratic Governor Deval Patrick in 2010.

“I see my role as pretty much copilot to Governor Baker,” Polito said. “It’s much like the [William] Weld-[Paul] Cellucci team where you had two people working from day one to tackle all of the issues together.”

Polito ran unsuccessfully for state treasurer in 2010. Three Democrats, Steve Kerrigan, Mike Lake and Leland Cheung are in the race. United Independent Party candidate Angus Jennings and independent Tracy Post are also running. The primary is Sept. 9.
