A new public history exhibit, “Jacob’s Pillow in Lee, Mass.,” will open June 1, 2026, in the Scolforo Gallery at the Lee Library. The exhibit traces the long and often overlooked relationship between the internationally renowned dance hub Jacob’s Pillow, and the neighboring town of Lee from the early 1930s to today.

Researched and curated by Lee resident Joshua D. Bloom, a member of the Lee Historical Society and a former academic researcher, the exhibit will be on display June 1–30, 2026. It will be open to the public during the library’s regular hours when the gallery is not hosting other programming.

The exhibit tells the story of relationships between Jacob’s Pillow and the town as they developed alongside one another through business, civic engagement, and personal connections.

Pamela Tatge, Executive and Artistic Director of Jacob’s Pillow, praised the project for highlighting the Pillow’s community roots. “This exhibit shines a light on the longstanding connections between Jacob’s Pillow and the town of Lee,” Tatge said. “The Pillow’s history is deeply intertwined with the people and communities that have supported it for generations.”

Several public programs will accompany the exhibit throughout June:

- Saturday, June 6, 12:30–1:30 p.m. — Family Dance Party with Dance Educator Sarah Daunt (sponsored by the Lee Youth Commission)
- Thursday, June 11, 11:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. — History of Lee Seniors Dancing at Jacob’s Pillow (sponsored by the Lee Council on Aging, at 21 Crossway Street)
- Thursday, June 11, 4:30–5:45 p.m. — “Secret” Gay History of Jacob’s Pillow with Historian Norton Owen (sponsored by Lee Pride, a project of Berkshire Pride, and Berkshire Stonewall Community Coalition)
- Saturday, June 13, 12:30–2:00 p.m. — “Secret” LGBTQ+ History of Lee Walking Tour led by Joshua D. Bloom (beginning and ending at Park Square during Lee Pride; tour sponsored by Lee Pride, a project of Berkshire Pride, and Berkshire Stonewall Community Coalition)
- Monday, June 22, 4:30–5:45 p.m. — History of the Cantarella School of Dance in Lee with Madeline Cantarella Culpo and Her Lee Dancers (sponsored by the Lee Historical Society)
- Monday, June 29, 4:30–5:45 p.m. — Closing Reception on Marketing, Tourism, and Business Relations between Jacob’s Pillow and the Town of Lee (sponsored by the Lee Chamber of Commerce)

Selected works by second & fourth graders inspired by native cultures and created under the instruction of art teacher Lori Masterson will be presented in the lower-level Interactive Museum. Included in Museum admission.

This watercolor workshop invites participants to slow down and observe nature’s shapes, textures, and colors up close. Using fresh plant references, I’ll guide the group step-by-step through drawing and painting a botanical subject.

Participants will learn how to build soft watercolor layers, mix fresh greens, and add expressive ink lines for detail. Along the way, we’ll talk about form, contrast, and the joy of noticing —turning an ordinary plant into a moment of wonder on paper.

This workshop encourages focus, creativity, and presence — perfect for relaxing and connecting as a team while learning a new visual language.

All materials provided. No experience needed.

Intro to Sculpture for Middle School: Joseph Pine

In this hands-on class, students will explore the fundamentals of working in three dimensions. Using accessible, recycled materials such as paper, cardboard, and wire, students will learn to build forms, think in space, and bring their ideas into the physical world. We’ll experiment with form, color, line, and structure while introducing core concepts of sculpture and 3D design.

This class encourages creative problem-solving, playful construction, and personal expression. No experience required—just curiosity and imagination!

Want to share your story creatively? Do you love comics, graphic novels, cartoons, and other forms of sequential art? Using a combination of researched storytelling methods and artistic experiments, students will explore what makes the art of cartooning unique and work together to translate our stories into real-life printed comic books. Students will be encouraged to stretch themselves creatively while still learning the technical basics needed to create a professional comic book. Each student will complete at least four pages of their own comic story, and the final stories will be assembled and printed as an anthology collection available at the local comic shop, World End Comics.
