More than half of Hudson Valley residents who work commute to their jobs within the Hudson Valley. Many make the trip to New York City as well. That’s according to a new report from the Marist Bureau of Economic Research that shows healthy employment levels in the region. It finds that the region has settled into a period of employment stabilization following the Great Recession. WAMC’s Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne spoke with the report’s author.

Marist College Names New President

A law school dean has been named president of Marist College in Poughkeepsie. Loyola University Chicago School of Law Dean and Professor David Yellen will become the fourth president in Marist’s 87 years as a college. Yellen will succeed President Dennis Murray, who has held office since 1979. Murray announced last year his plan to step down from the position on June 30 after 37 years leading Marist. Yellen has written extensively on sentencing issues and served as an advisor on white collar crime to President Clinton's transition team.

 

There is new bus service in Dutchess County that is a partnership with two colleges.

A 16-year-old City of Poughkeepsie youth has been arrested for sending two threatening tweets to Marist College in the Town of Poughkeepsie over a seven-hour period threatening to commit an offense that created fear resulting in the college cancelling classes and telling students to stay in your dormitories.

Since I work at Marist College, and have for many years, I tend to avoid commentating on the air about Marist stuff, if for no other reason than keeping my job. And because there’s an obvious potential conflict of issue, which doesn’t always make for great journalism. So I will acknowledge that up front, lest anyone suggest I’m simply a homer or at least didn’t recognize the incestuous appearance of this piece.

Couple To Deliver Commencement Speech At Marist

Two journalists will be the first husband-and-wife team to deliver a commencement address at Poughkeepsie-based Marist College.

  In this morning's Roundtable Debrief on Syria and the crisis in the country, we're joined by President of AMIDEAST, Ambassador Theodore Kattouf. He's a former US ambassador to Syria and the United Arab Emirates. He's also served as a Middle East analyst at the US State Department.

He will be coming to the Hudson Valley to give a lecture for the World Affairs Council of the Mid-Hudson Valley. The talk will be April 8 at 7 pm at the Hancock Center at Marist College. The title of the talk is: "Charting a Path for US Policy toward Syria, ISIS and Across the Middle East."

While in the region he will also speak to students at Bard College about diplomacy and will attend an event at Vassar College.‬
