MLB:
In Major League Baseball, in the American League, Derek Jeter capped his Yankee Stadium farewell with a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning, the latest storybook moment in a charmed and illustrious career, to give New York a 6-5 victory last night over the Baltimore Orioles. Jeter saved the best for last — a sharp, opposite-field single to right field that knocked in the winning run. After the game Jeter said that he played his last game at the position, and he would only serve as the designated hitter in his final three games in Boston this weekend.
Elsewhere Boston blew out Tampa Bay 11-1, Texas edged Oakland 2-1, Kansas City doubled up the White Sox 6-3, Detroit topped Minnesota 4-2, and it was Seattle over Toronto 7-5.
In the National League, in a doubleheader, the Mets bested Washington 7-4 in the first game but Washington shut out the Mets 3-0 in the second. Miami won against Philadelphia 6-4, Pittsburgh topped Atlanta 10-1, Cincinnati beat Milwaukee 5-3, and San Francisco edged San Diego 9-8 to clinch a National League wild berth.
NFL:
In the NFL, Larry Donnell caught three of Eli Manning's four touchdown passes, and the New York Giants moved to .500 with a 45-14 victory over the Washington Redskins last night. Second-year tight end Donnell had one career touchdown entering the game. He finished with seven catches for 54 yards. Manning was 28 for 39 for 300 yards and had a 1-yard scoring run. Meanwhile CBS lead analyst Phil Simms followed through on his promise to not say "Redskins" during Washington's nationally televised game against the New York Giants.
This Sunday at 1 p.m. Buffalo sees the Texans at Houston and Detroit meets the Jets in the Meadowlands. New England faces Kansas City in Arrowhead Stadium on Monday Night Football at 8:30.
A law enforcement official says he sent the video of Ray Rice punching his then-fiancee to NFL headquarters to the attention of league security chief Jeffrey Miller in April.
Miller unequivocally denied that he had ever watched or received the video, and the NFL has said no league employee saw it until TMZ Sports released the video earlier this month.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he isn't authorized to talk about the case. He said he doesn't know if Miller ever saw the DVD. His only communication with the NFL was a voicemail from an unidentified woman from league offices confirming receipt of the package.
The official said he has no plans to talk to NFL investigators about the case.
GOLF-RYDER CUP:
The Ryder Cup is underway in Scotland. Phil Mickelson is matched up against Rory McIlroy as Europe hosts the United States in Friday's start to the Ryder Cup. Mickelson will be teamed with Keegan Bradley in one of the four morning four ball matches against McIlroy and Sergio Garcia.
U.S. captain Tom Watson has paired two of his rookies, Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed, against European Ryder Cup star Ian Poulter and Stephen Gallacher.
Europe is the Cup holder after a stunning rally in the singles matches two years ago at Medinah. That gave them seven Cup wins in the last nine meetings.
NASCAR:
NASCAR's Tony Stewart said the crash that killed Kevin Ward Jr. in a sprint cup race in upstate New York was '100 percent an accident'.
Little League:
Mo'ne Davis took the field in Cooperstown after taking her place in history.
The pitching star for Philadelphia's Taney Dragons donated her jersey to the baseball Hall of Fame on Thursday after becoming the first girl to win Little League World Series games.
The 13-year-old Davis was joined by her Philly teammates and players on the Anderson Monarchs, her longtime travel team. They played an exhibition game Thursday at Doubleday Field against the Catskill Mountain Cougars under-12 team from Stamford, New York.
