In the NFL, quarterback Brandon Weeden replaced injured starter Brian Hoyer and rallied the Cleveland Browns to a 37-24 win over the Buffalo Bills, who also lost starting rookie quarterback EJ Manuel with a knee injury.
Weeden threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Josh Gordon in the third quarter as the Browns (3-2) won their third straight and temporarily moved into sole possession of first place in the AFC North.
In baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers took the opener of their NL division series by dominating the Atlanta Braves 6-1.
Carlos Beltran's three-run homer highlighted a seven-run third inning and the St. Louis Cardinals got seven stingy innings from Adam Wainwright in routing the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-1 in their NL division series opener.
Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox will play their first postseason game tonight when they meet the Tampa Bay Rays in the opener of the best-of-five AL division series. Two left-handers are scheduled to pitch with Matt Moore going for the Rays against Jon Lester.
In college football, the No. 12 UCLA Bruins are now 4-0 after beating Utah 34-27.
Elsewhere, the Patriots placed defensive tackle Vince Wilfork on injured reserve and signed wide receiver Austin Collie. The Pats also released rookie tight end Zach Sudfeld which might signal the return of Rob Gronkowski Sunday.
In the NHL, Pittsburgh blanked New Jersey 3-0.
Boston passed Tampa Bay 3-1.
St. Louis doubled up Nashville 4-2.
Phoenix took the New York Rangers 4-1.
San Jose defeated Vancouver 4-1.
Florida beat Dallas 4-2.
Washington topped Calgary 5-4 in a shootout.
And Los Angeles bested Minnesota 3-2 in a shoot out.
Finally in golf, the Americans survived a late rally and put the International team in a familiar hole at the Presidents Cup.
Steve Stricker blasted out of a plugged lie in the face of a bunker to 3 feet to save par as he and 20-year-old Jordan Spieth hung on for a 1-up win in the final match on the course at Muirfield Village.
That gave the Americans a 3½-2½ lead. It's the fourth straight time they have led after the opening session in the Presidents Cup.
