A nursing and rehabilitation center in Williamstown, Massachusetts has seen cases of COVID-19 among residents skyrocket from one on Tuesday to 14 by Friday.

Lisa Gaudet is the Vice President of Communications for Berkshire Healthcare, which manages the Williamstown Commons facility. She says 13 of the residents were being tended to in the center, and one was moved to Berkshire Medical Center.

“We have 23 residents that have been tested. Four of those tests are negative, and five we are waiting results on,” Gaudet told WAMC.

Gaudet says Williamstown Commons moved all the residents who tested positive to one area of the building. She says the center has enough personal protective equipment to manage the situation. All 134 residents are checked three times a day for coronavirus symptoms, and anyone showing signs of the disease is being tested.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018, following stints at WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Western Massachusetts, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production. His free time is spent with his cat Harry, experimental electronic music, and exploring the woods.
