ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York Democratic party chairwoman and Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner is criticizing Gov. Andrew Cuomo for what she considers his questionable proposal to use borrowing to ease a fiscal crisis for local taxpayers.
Cuomo has proposed allowing municipalities facing potential insolvency to borrow against future savings in the state's new pension reform plan. Miner tells the Syracuse Post-Standard and The New York Times that seems unwise.
Following her comments, Cuomo's office released a statement Thursday from Republican Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney supporting Cuomo's plan.
Cuomo has said cities need to cut costs and his borrowing plan could help.
Another Democrat, former Assemblyman Richard Brodsky of the Wagner School of New York University, says few think it's wise policy to borrow to pay for current operational expenses.
