Sports Report: 5 AHL Teams Moving To California To Form A Pacific Division

NFL:

Super Bowl XLIX starts on Sunday at 6:30 on NBC. The big game features AFC Champion the New England Patriots and the NFC Champion Seattle Seahawks in Glendale, Arizona.

Browns receiver Josh Gordon says his latest trouble with the NFL results from having a few drinks with teammates on a flight to Las Vegas on Jan. 2, after Cleveland's season ended.

The former Pro Bowler was suspended for last season after testing positive for marijuana, and he says the penalty was reduced in part by his willingness to agree not to drink alcohol for the rest of the season. Gordon said in an open letter on Medium that he accepts responsibility for a failed alcohol test that could bring another suspension from the league.

Testimony continues this morning in the Fall River murder trial of former Patriots player Aaron Hernandez. In yesterday's opening statements, prosecutors said Hernandez's DNA turned up on a marijuana cigarette shared with murder victim Odin Lloyd.

NBA:

In the NBA, Indiana crushed New York 103-82, Memphis topped Denver 99-69, Milwaukee bested Orlando 115-100, and it was the Lakers over Chicago in double overtime 123-118.

NHL:

Over on the ice, Montreal blanked the Rangers 1-0, Boston topped the Islanders 5-2, Philadelphia won against Winnipeg 5-2, Arizona bested Toronto 3-1, Florida edged Columbus 3-2, Dallas doubled up Ottawa 6-3, Tampa Bay defeated Detroit 5-1, St. Louis won against Nashville in a shootout 5-4, Minnesota blanked Calgary 1-0, Edmonton skated by Buffalo 3-2, and it was San Jose over Anaheim 6-3.

The AHL announced yesterday plans to move five teams to the West Coast to a newly created Pacific Division. The Adirondack Flames will relocate from Glens Falls, New York to Stockton, California and the Worcester Sharks will relocate to San Jose, California. The Manchester Monarchs will relocate to Ontario, California from Manchester, New Hampshire. The Norfolk Admirals will move to San Diego, California from Norfolk, Virginia. And the Edmonton Oilers affiliate the Oklahoma City Barons will relocate from Oklahoma City to Bakersfield, California.

Martin Brodeur has officially announced his retirement as an NHL player.

The all-time leader in victories and shutouts has accepted a front-office position with St. Louis, where he wrapped up his career after 21 outstanding years with the Devils. He said he is leaving the game with a smile on his face and excited about his next opportunity.

Brodeur ends his career with 691 victories, 125 shutouts, a 2.24 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage. He said he would certainly entertain a return to the Devils as a team executive.

MLB:

The Boston Red Sox have agreed to terms with outfielder Daniel Nava on a one-year, $1.85 million contract. The deal means the sides avoid arbitration. Nava batted .270 with 21 doubles, four homers and 37 RBIs in 113 games last season. He also played 24 games at Triple-A Pawtucket.

Golf:

Tiger Woods has opened his 2015 PGA schedule with a 2-over 73 in the first round of the Phoenix Open. Woods was plus-5 following four bogeys, a double-bogey and a birdie, but he rallied with an eagle on the par-5 13th hole.

Ryan Palmer was the clubhouse leader after carding five birdies and an eagle for a 7-under 64, one shot ahead of Bubba Watson and Keegan Bradley. Daniel Berger was on the course at minus-6 when play was suspended by darkness.

Austrailian Open:

Top seed Novak Djokovic will take on No. 4 Stan Wawrinka for the right to face No. 6 Andy Murray.

Djokovic has dominated the all-time series, going 16-3 versus Wawrinka. However, Wawrinka is the defending champ.

Murray earned his spot in the final with a semifinal win over No. 7 Tomas Berdych 6-7, 6-0, 6-3, 7-5. This will be his fourth trip to the Australian final after three losses.
