Albany's South Mall Expressway is about to undergo a rehabilitation. Governor Andrew Cuomo on Friday announced the $22.4 million project for the stretch of road that connects the Empire State Plaza, Interstate 787, the Dunn Memorial Bridge, and Albany's downtown.
Work will include replacing the concrete driving surface of the four bridges of the expressway. Structural repairs will also be made to the bridges. Also planned are repairs to the pavement leading into the tunnel and connecting ramps.
Cuomo called the repairs "crucial" and said they would be completed "with as little disruption to drivers as possible." About 21,000 vehicles use the expressway each day.
Work is scheduled to begin this year and run through fall 2018.
