Governor Cuomo on Friday announced $9 million dollars in grants for five broadband projects in the upstate region.
The grants are part of the governor’s $25 million Connect NY Broadband Grant program and Regional Economic Development Council awards. In the northern tier, the Development Authority of the North Country will receive just over $2.7 million.
Most of the money will be used to create a North Country Public Safety Network to expand public emergency operations. Half a million dollars will be matched by the Development Authority for a loan program to allow completion of telecommunications facilities in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.
Time Warner Cable will receive approximately $5.3 million to expand high speed data and voice services to municipalities in seven regions across the state.
