Humane Society's Brian Shapiro On Illegal Ivory Trade Law

Humane Society

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed a law increasing the civil and criminal penalties for buyers and sellers in the illegal trade of ivory. The law bans the sale of elephant an mammoth ivory and rhinoceros horns with some exceptions for antiques at least 100 years old that contain small amounts of ivory. It is estimated that the ivory trade results in the slaughter of 96 elephants a day, but the New York State Director for the Humane Society of the United States, Brian Shapiro, says there is another dark side that most people don't understand.
