Stockbridge, Massachusetts health and yoga retreat Kripalu has announced that it will lay off 450 employees and close for the remainder of the year.

Closed for more than two months due to COVID-19, CEO Barbara Vacarr says the move is the result of a massive hit to the center’s revenue.

“We are in the $36 million range of our budget, of our annual revenue – and we’ll take a 90% hit,” she told WAMC News.

Around 30 employees will remain on staff with reduced salaries to focus on Kriaplu’s essential functions. Additionally, 16 staff members have been furloughed until the center decides the situation is safe enough to reopen. Vacarr says the center plans to launch a summer food takeout program.
