The legislation would significantly reduce student debt.

U.S. Senators from Connecticut, Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, have backed Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont in introducing legislation Monday to make public colleges and universities tuition free for working families.

The legislation would eliminate tuition and fees at four-year public colleges and universities for families who make up to $120,000 a year.

It would also make education at community colleges free from tuition and fees, and significantly reduce student debt.

The estimated $600 billion cost of the legislation would be paid for by a separate bill to tax Wall Street speculation.

Connecticut has joined leaders from Massachusetts, New York, California, Minnesota, Arizona, Vermont, Virginia, Texas, Rhode Island, Wisconsin, Maryland and Washington D.C. who also co-sponsored the bill.
