'We Can Do Better' Conn. Secretary Of State Seeks Revamp Of Registrar System

CT.gov

Connecticut Secretary of the State Denise Merrill recently announced her plans to overhaul how cities and towns oversee elections. She says there is lack of accountability and cites reports of dysfunctional relationships between local registrars.  The system has come up scrutiny after  polls opened late in Hartford this past Election Day. Under the Democrat's proposed legislation, the current system of locally elected, partisan registrars of voters would be scrapped. They'd be replaced by a municipal employee who meets certain qualifications. Merrill spoke with WAMC’s Berkshire Bureau Chief Jim Levulis about her ideas.
