Entering the final weekend before the Massachusetts primaries, one gubernatorial candidate will spend time in the county farthest from the state capital.Don Berwick, a former Medicare and Medicaid administrator is running as a Democrat in the race to succeed Democratic Governor Deval Patrick, who is not seeking a third term. Berwick is facing state Treasurer Steve Grossman and Attorney General Martha Coakley in Tuesday’s primary. On two main issues Berwick is proposing a single-payer healthcare system and opposes casinos in Massachusetts.
“All of the four western counties have been areas of great strength and resonance,” Berwick said. “I think these are places where people care about their communities. They identified with their communities and the message I’m bringing.”
Berwick is holding a get out the vote rally at his campaign office at 255 North St. in Pittsfield at 10 a.m. Saturday. Charlie Baker faces Mark Fisher in the Republican primary. Three independents are on November’s ballot.
