The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is seeking public comments on a proposed recreation and management plan for a forest preserve in the Catskills.

Public input is for the Shandaken Wild Forest — six parcels totaling 6,032 acres in the town of Shandaken, Ulster County, and the town of Lexington, Greene County. DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos says proposed revisions include expanding the trail system and offering biking, cross-country skiing and hiking. The original management plan for the Shandaken Wild Forest was completed in 2005. Since, DEC has acquired 1,200 acres on the eastern slopes of Belleayre Mountain, 610 acres of which were added to the Shandaken Wild Forest. The proposal also calls for removing buildings and debris on the Lower Birch Creek parcel and establishing a scenic vista on the Giggle Hollow parcel. Public comment will be accepted through September 28.
