Part Of A Sullivan County Village Could Become A Historic District

A section of downtown Monticello has been proposed to be added as a historic district to the National Register of Historic Places

A portion of a Sullivan County village could soon be on the National Register of Historic Places, and that, say county officials, could help with downtown revitalization.

Monticello’s downtown Broadway area is up for consideration as an historic district. And there is a public information meeting about the potential designation at Monticello Village Hall Monday evening at 5:30. County Legislator Alan Sorensen says Monticello has a treasure trove of beautiful mixed-use buildings that are worthy of National Historic District designation. Downtown Monticello is to be nominated as a district because of its concentration and continuity of historic early 20th century buildings. Similar National Register historic districts in Sullivan County include downtown Liberty and the hamlet of Callicoon.
