The New York City Department of Environmental Protection Tuesday announced the start of a project to refurbish a former laboratory building in Ulster County.
The DEP’s $7.4 million restoration project is of the former Ben Nesin lab building on Route 28A near the Ashokan Reservoir. The four-story building was constructed in 1961 to serve as an office and water quality laboratory. It stopped being used as a lab when DEP finished its Kingston Laboratory in 2008, but the building continued to house staff who oversee operations at Ashokan and Schoharie reservoirs. The building, which is expected to be complete by 2018, will be refurbished as modern office space for those employees plus an additional 12. The project is expected to have little or no impact on traffic along Route 28A.
