Beacon Schools Superintendent Resigns

The superintendent of a Hudson Valley school district has resigned. She was the district’s eighth superintendent in 10 years.

The Beacon City School District Thursday accepted the resignation of Dr. Barbara Walkley as superintendent of schools. Her resignation comes as a group of parents and community members have grown increasingly vocal about a number of issues. One parent recently filed a petition calling for removal of the superintendent. A statement issued by the Board of Education says it had been the Board’s hope that Dr. Walkley would have served for years to come but, “the Board and Dr. Walkley have concluded that recent allegations brought by a handful of community members, which the Board believes to be without merit, have compromised Dr. Walkley’s ability to continue to effectively serve as the District’s educational leader.” End quote.  The Board has appointed Deputy Superintendent Ann Marie Quartironi to serve as Interim Superintendent, effective Friday.
