A New York state Senator will join community groups in Ulster County Friday afternoon to call for a higher minimum wage.
Democratic state Senator Cecilia Tkaczyk will join Citizen Action of New York, the Alliance for a Just Society and local labor and faith leaders to release “Families Out of Balance,” an analysis of the impacts of what they say is New York State’s failure to adequately raise the minimum wage. Citizen Action of New York wants to see the minimum wage raised to $10.10 an hour, indexed to inflation even though this hourly rate, notes a spokesman, is not enough to cover basic costs of living in many New York communities. As of December 31, 2013, New York State’s minimum wage increased from $7.25 an hour to $8.00 an hour and will rise to $8.75 an hour at the end of this year, and to $9.00 an hour the last day of 2015. Tkaczyk will join the others at the Clinton Avenue United Methodist Church in Kingston at noon.
