A medical college in Westchester County has received a grant to study lung cancer in relation to certain compounds.
New York Medical College in Valhalla is the recipient of a National Institutes of Health grant of more than $200,000 to help study the effect of nickel carcinogens during lung cancer formation. Such nickel compounds are found in automobile exhausts, tobacco smoke, and during wood or coal combustion. In announcing the grant, Congresswoman Nita Lowey, the ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, said the grant will help the medical college to further explore the relevance of certain proteins in lung cancer formation and progression in cellular and animal models, and help evaluate whether certain proteins are suitable targets for therapy. Lowey is a longtime member of the subcommittee that funds medical research.
