Oakes & Smith - Music at the Southfield Church

Oakes & Smith - Music at the Southfield Church

Music at the Southfield Church announces its Seventh Season, celebrating music made with the most impressive of all instruments – the human voice! Each Saturday evening in June, voices of local Berkshire artists will reverberate exquisitely in our gorgeous 229-year-old meeting house with its unparalleled acoustics. Each concert begins at 7:00 pm at the Southfield Church, 234 Norfolk Road in the Southfield Village of New Marlborough. For more information, a full season lineup, and updated Covid protocols, visit thesouthfieldchurch.org. Admission is free; a retiring collection will be taken at the door following each concert to support the artists. A reception on the lawn follows each concert (weather permitting).

Music at the Southfield Church is supported through the generosity of the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the New Marlborough Cultural Council.

JUNE 10 – OAKES & SMITH

Katherine and Robert Oakes will demonstrate what unity sounds like when they share their unique blend of close-voice harmony, singing original folk art song inspired by lives lived in our enchanting Berkshire Hills.

Husband-and-wife folk duo Oakes & Smith (Katherine Oakes on vocals and Robert Oakes on vocals and guitar) will present a concert of popular music entitled “Original Folk Art Song in Close-Voice Harmony” on June 10. Known for their “soulful sense of wonder,” they share music that celebrates love, creativity, mystery, and natural beauty. That may come from spending time in the Berkshires, which the duo describes as "a peaceful place filled with natural and cultural beauty."

Their debut album “First Flight” nearly a decade ago (which has been compared to music by Simon & Garfunkel, Cat Stevens, and Joan Baez) placed them firmly on the indie and folk scene. Since that time, the duo has performed at cafes, bars, festivals, theaters, art centers and other venues—including The Guthrie Center, Infinity Music Hall, Kripalu, and Canyon Ranch. In addition to singing, Katherine works as an art teacher and Robert as Director of Communications at The Rectory School in Pomfret, CT. Robert also leads ghost tours at Edith Wharton’s The Mount, Ventfort Hall, and the Church on the Hill.
