County Legislature Weighs In On Bail Reform

As New York state Democrats wrestle with bail and discovery reforms, the Rensselaer County Legislature is weighing in.

The Republican-led Rensselaer County legislature unanimously passed a resolution opposing sections of the state’s new criminal justice statutes they say have set dangerous criminals free. Republican Scott Bendett represents Nassau, Sand Lake and Schodack.

"The vote was 18 to nothing and what it really is a resolution basically imploring the state to go back and review bail reform and make some changes that make it better for everybody. And I think this resolution really sends a strong message."

The resolution lists many of the crimes that could result in suspects being released with no bail because judges have been stripped of their discretion to assess each case individually. Democratic state leaders say they are considering possible tweaks to the laws.
