Green Christmas In The Cities

WAMC Photo by Dave Lucas

The lack of snowfall across the Capital Region may help area cities' budgets.

While there may not be a "White Christmas" this year, some city coffers may get a little greener, thanks to mother nature. The plows, salters and sanding trucks have been sitting idle in municipal garages.

Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan isn't counting on the warm temperatures continuing but "...right now for our 2015 budget, which is coming to a close, it certainly is helping. We did have some snow at the beginning of the year, but not having to activate and have snow storm response here at the end of the year, certainly helps us."

National Weather Service data accessed by the Times Union shows that since 1985, Albany has seen only eight snow-covered Christmas Day mornings.

Mayor Gary McCarthy has a wishful-thinking snow removal plan for Schenectady:

"It's gonna stay warm and sunny."

Dave Lucas is WAMC’s Capital Region Bureau Chief. Born and raised in Albany, he’s been involved in nearly every aspect of local radio since 1981. Before joining WAMC, Dave was a reporter and anchor at WGY in Schenectady. Prior to that he hosted talk shows on WYJB and WROW, including the 1999 series of overnight radio broadcasts tracking the JonBenet Ramsey murder case with a cast of callers and characters from all over the world via the internet. In 2012, Dave received a Communicator Award of Distinction for his WAMC news story "Fail: The NYS Flood Panel," which explores whether the damage from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee could have been prevented or at least curbed. Dave began his radio career as a “morning personality” at WABY in Albany.
