Monday, February 23
Cliff Ross - University of North Florida  
Coral Reef Ecology
Dr. Cliff Ross is a marine biologist and associate professor in the Department of Biology at the University of North Florida. His research program utilizes cellular and ecological approaches to better understand stress responses of corals and seagrasses. Dr. Ross has published over 30 peer-reviewed journal articles on how environmental pollutants and global scale climate change impact marine ecosystems. He obtained his Bachelors and Masters of Science degrees from Florida Atlantic University in 1996 and 1998, respectively. In 2005, he received his PhD in Marine Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara and was subsequently awarded a postdoctoral fellowship at the Smithsonian Marine Station at Ft. Pierce from 2005-2007. Dr. Ross has been at UNF since 2007 and is currently the Assistant Chair of the Biology Department.

Outsmarting Whooping Cough
Jennifer Maynard is the Laurence E. McMakin, Jr. Centennial Faculty Fellow and an associate professor of chemical engineering at The McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. There, she runs the Maynard Lab for Protein and Immuno-engineering.

Paul Gaffney - St. John's University    
The Meaning of Competition
Dr. Paul Gaffney was born and raised in Syracuse, NY. He earned a B.S. in Biology from Niagara University, and was a member of the basketball team; he earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy from The Catholic University of America, Washington D.C. At St. John’s University (NY) he teaches in Ethics, Philosophy of Law, and Philosophy of Language, among others; at John Cabot University (Rome, Italy) he teaches Introduction to Philosophy and Business Ethics. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of the Philosophy of Sport and has published articles and reviews in such journals as The Review of Metaphysics, The Philosophical Quarterly, and Contemporary Philosophy. He is currently writing a book about competition.

Brad Hansen - UCLA
Finding Exo-Planets via The Transit Method
Brad Hansen is a professor of physics and astronomy at The University of California Los Angeles. His principal research interest is the search for habitable extra-solar planets and he maintains a long-standing interest in the existence and survival of planets around evolved stars. He was previous a Hubble Fellow and a research associate at the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics.

Cory Koedel - University of Missouri          
Improving Teaching Evaluations
Cory Koedel is an associate professor of economics and public policy at the University of Missouri-Columbia. His research is in the areas of teacher quality and compensation, curriculum evaluation, and the efficacy of higher education institutions. Dr. Koedel is an associate editor for the Economics of Education Review and serves on the editorial board for Education Finance and Policy and the board of directors for the Association for Education Finance and Policy. He has also served on technical advisory panels related to school and teacher evaluations for school districts, state education agencies and non-profit organizations. He was awarded the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the American Educational Research Association (Division L) in 2008, and in 2012 he received the Junior Scholar Award from the same group. He received his PhD in economics from the University of California, San Diego in 2007.
