Fighting Cancer with Fruit Flies
Dr. Michele Markstein is an assistant professor of biology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Her research focuses on understanding the basic properties of stem cells that can contribute to cancer. Her laboratory employs the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism, which her lab uses to develop genetic and chemical strategies to understand stem cells, the stem cell microenvironment, and cancer processes. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.

Dr. Paul Matthew Sutter is the INFN Fellow in Theoretical Physics at the Astronomical Observatory of Trieste and Visiting Scholar at Ohio State University. Paul received his Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Illinois in 2011, and spent three years at the Paris Institute of Astrophysics. He now splits his time between Trieste, Italy, and Columbus, Ohio. He recently debuted his #AskaSpaceman podcast [AskASpaceman.com] and would love to hear from you with astronomy questions.

Dr. Harris frequently serves as a source for local newspaper and television reporters, and has also been quoted in articles in USA Today, San Francisco Chronicle and The New York Times.

Jessica Gall Myrick - Indiana University

Dr. Jessica Gall Myrick received her Ph.D. in Mass Communication and a certificate in Interdisciplinary Health Communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2013). Her research examines the impact of emotions on media processes and effects, with an emphasis on how media use can lead to beneficial and prosocial outcomes. Previously Gall Myrick worked as a multiplatform reporter and producer and as a magazine writer and columnist. Gall Myrick also previously served as the director of experiential education and recruitment for the Indiana University School of Journalism. She holds a B.A. (Political Science, 2005) and an M.A. (Journalism, 2007) from Indiana University. While studying at IU, Gall Myrick was an All-American track and cross country athlete for the Hoosiers.

Stephanie Pietros - Mount Saint Mary College

Dr. Stephanie Pietros is Assistant Professor of English at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, NY, where she teaches courses in medieval and Renaissance language and literature as well as first-year writing and literature courses. She holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in English Literature from Fordham University and a B.A. in English and Music from Providence College. Her research is currently focused in two areas: late sixteenth- and seventeenth-century poetry and poetics, and interdisciplinary studies in literature and music. A violinist, she plays with the Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra.
