Trail to Promote Tourism

Poughkeepsie, NY – Dutchess County New York is in the processing of creating of a multi-million dollar rail trail for use by hikers and bicycle riders. The county expects the trail to expand the economic base by promoting tourism throughout the entire region.

Warm Winter Leads to Early Maple Tapping

Plattsburgh, NY – Maple season is arriving early in Vermont and New York this year. The warmer than usual January temperatures have some maple sugar-makers in the region out tapping the trees, and in some cases, already boiling syrup. WAMC's North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley has more.

Douglas Comments on Illegal Farm Workers

Montpelier, VT – Vermont Governor James Douglas says the state faces a dilemma regarding illegal immigrants on its dairy farms. It has been a low priority for Vermont law enforcement to check for undocumented immigrants and refer them to federal authorities, but the feds may be cracking down. The Governor's comments highlight what the Farm Bureau notes has been a long known problem - a labor shortage on the state's dairy farms. WAMC's North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley has more.
