House GOP Subpoenas NY, Mass. AGs On Climate Change Probe

New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman

A Republican House chairman has issued subpoenas to two Democratic state attorneys general seeking records about their investigation into whether Exxon Mobil misled investors about global warming.

Texas Rep. Lamar Smith, chairman of the House Science Committee, said Wednesday that the attorneys general of New York and Massachusetts were pursuing a political agenda on behalf of environmental groups at the expense of scientists' right to free speech.

Smith has been battling with New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey for months, saying they have refused to give the Science Committee information it has requested on the Exxon Mobil case.

Schneiderman's office said the Science panel did not have legal authority to issue subpoenas to a "duly elected, constitutional officer of a separate sovereign government."
