Just as New York raised the minimum age to buy tobacco and electronic cigarettes to 21 from 18, a local Albany County law that would have banned flavored tobacco sales was defeated.

Albany County legislators voted 22-14 Tuesday night in favor of Local Law D, instituting a five-cent fee on paper bags to promote the use of reusable bags in the county. However, the County Legislature failed to reach the 20 votes needed to pass a ban on the sale of flavored tobacco products.

A local law that would create an independent redistricting process is scheduled to be voted on tonight by the Albany County Legislature.  Local Law O seeks to create a non-partisan, independent redistricting process in Albany County following the next federal census in 2020.
