Tom Brady

  • If you’re a fan of the American version of the TV show The Office, you likely remember an episode where Michael Scott makes all his employees do a celebrity roast of him. Not surprisingly, it doesn’t go as planned and ends up something of an unmitigated disaster with a lot of hurt feelings.
  • There’s a general supposition amongst the football watching public that Tom Brady must regret his decision. That is, Tom Brady, the 45-year-old quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, must regret the decision to return to the NFL for another year instead of retiring, as he did after losing in the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs last year only to retract that intention a month later so he could return to Tampa for one more shot at a Super Bowl ring, of which he already has seven. By all accounts, Tom Brady had long abandoned human principles like ageing, so one more year with a team that seemingly had all the parts was no big deal.
  • Perhaps the most riveting story of the NFL preseason has nothing to do with rosters or depth charts or how any team looks heading into the regular season. It has to do with Tom Brady, who clearly doesn’t have to worry about playing his way into the starting spot with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The intrigue around the 45-year-old future Hall of Famer has nothing to do with what he’s done on the field. It’s the fact that Brady disappeared for a full 11 days, leaving his team to go through dress rehearsals without their leading man and the role of quarterback to an understudy for the first two games that don’t count.
  • For those of you old enough to remember board games, one of the more prominent from my childhood was the Game of Life, a board game where players spun their way through life’s milestones, like marriage and kids and jobs, and tried to get to retirement as quickly as possible with the most disposable cash. Tom Brady does not seem to understand that game.
  • Tom Brady retired Tuesday after 22-seasons as an elite, Super Bowl winning quarterback. ESPN reporter Seth Wickersham and author of the book, "It's Better to Be Feared: The New England Patriots Dynasty and the Pursuit of Greatness," is here this morning to talk about it.
