NBA:
In the NBA playoffs, Golden State topped Oklahoma City 120-111 to stave off elimination in the Western Conference finals. The Thunder lead the series 3-2.
Warriors guard Stephen Curry was a unanimous selection to the All-NBA First Team after taking every first-place vote in the MVP balloting. Curry was joined on the first team by Cleveland forward LeBron James, Oklahoma City guard Russell Westbrook, San Antonio forward Kawhi Leonard and Los Angeles Clippers center DeAndre Jordan. James is a first-team choice for the 10th time in 13 seasons. (The Second Team consists of Thunder forward Kevin Durant, Warriors forward Draymond Green, Sacramento center DeMarcus Cousins, Clippers guard Chris Paul and Portland guard Damian Lillard.)
Mike D'Antoni will reportedly become the Houston Rockets' coach after reaching agreement on a four-year deal. The 65-year-old D'Antoni led the Suns to a pair of Western Conference finals appearances over five seasons, with Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire running his fast-paced offense. But his time with the Lakers and Knicks was not nearly as successful, leaving him with a 455-426 record in 12 seasons as an NBA head coach.
NHL:
In the NHL playoffs, Pittsburgh beat Tampa Bay 2-1 to advance to the Stanley Cup finals for the first time since 2009.
MLB:
In baseball, in the American League, Toronto beat the Yankees 3-1, Houston doubled up Baltimore 4-2. The White Sox at Kansas City game was postponed.
In the National League, Pittsburgh topped Arizona 8-3, Washington beat St. Louis 2-1, and it was Milwaukee over Atlanta 6-2.
In interleague play, Colorado bested Boston 8-2 as Jackie Bradley Jr.’s 29-game hitting streak came to an end and it was Miami over Tampa Bay 9-1.
The defending World Series-champion Royals have lost yet another player to a major injury. Third baseman Mike Moustakas has landed on the 15-day disabled list with a torn ACL in his right knee. Moustakas was injured in Sunday's outfield collision with teammate Alex Gordon, who suffered a fractured right wrist on the play and was placed on the DL earlier this week.
WNBA:
In the WNBA, the Sparks beat Connecticut 77-72 and it was Washington over Seattle in overtime 84-82.
NASCAR:
Martin Truex Jr. has won the pole for Sunday's Coca-Cola 600, NASCAR's longest race of the year. Truex turned a lap of 192.328 to take the top spot from Joey Logano, who had the top qualifying time in the first two rounds and won the All-Star race last week at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will start third, Denny Hamlin fourth and Brad Keselowski fifth.
Horse Racing:
Gift Box made a sharp comeback to win the $77,000 allowance feature for 3-year-olds on Thursday at Belmont Park. The gray colt trained by Chad Brown rallied four-wide around the turn to beat Realm by 4 1/2 lengths. It was his first race since running third to Mohaymen, one of the top contenders in the Kentucky Derby, in the Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct in November.
NCAA:
This weekend's final four in the NCAA men's lacrosse championship has a Maryland flavor with top-ranked Maryland and Loyola both hoping to advance in the semifinals. Loyola takes on North Carolina in Philadelphia, with the Terps then facing Brown. The title game will be played Monday.
Whale-watching:
With summer whale watching season fast approaching, conservation advocates and government agencies who want to protect whales say a mobile app designed to help mariners steer clear of the animals is helping keep them alive. The International Fund for Animal Welfare collaborated with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on the Whale App Alert, which first came out four years ago.
NFL:
The Baltimore Ravens will lose a week of offseason practices. The NFL has mandated that the club has to forfeit one week of offseason practice sessions for violating the labor agreement on such workouts. The NFL also fined the team an undisclosed amount. The Ravens broke the rules when they had rookies and first-year players don pads at a minicamp, in violation of the CBA rules.
PGA:
Bryce Molder birdied six of his last nine holes for a 6-under 64 and a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Dean & Deluca Invitational at Colonial. Molder carded all six of his birdies on the front nine after playing his first nine at even par. He was in the first group of the day off the 10th tee, and was on the 16th green when play was stopped for 75 minutes because of rain and lightning. Patrick Reed, Anirban Lahiri and Webb Simpson shot 65.
Rocco Mediate played the first 13 holes in 9 under and closed with five pars for a 62 to match the Senior PGA Championship and Harbor Shore records. Mediate matched the marks set by Kenny Perry in the 2012 final round. The 53-year-old Mediate capped a front-nine 29 with an eagle on the par-5 ninth and added birdies on the par-3 11th and 13th holes at Jack Nicklaus-designed course. Gene Sauers had a bogey-free 63. Bernhard Langer opened with a 69 as he goes for an unprecedented sweep of all five PGA Tour Champions majors.
LPGA:
Christina Kim fired an 8-under 64 to top the leaderboard in the LPGA's inaugural Volvik Championship. Ariya Jutanugarn was a shot back as she tries to win her third consecutive start. Minjee Lee, So Yeon Ryu and Marina Alex shot 68, putting them four shots behind Kim. Second-ranked Inbee Park's lingering thumb injury led her to withdraw from the tournament.
