NFL:

The Los Angeles Rams have used the No. 1 selection in the NFL draft to take California's Quarterback Jared Goff, just before the Philadelphia Eagles pick Carson Wentz of North Dakota State with the No. 2 choice. The San Diego Chargers pulled off a bit of a surprise by taking Ohio State defensive end Joey Bosa with the third selection. Dallas also went with an Ohio State product at No. 4, grabbing running back Ezekiel Elliott.

The New York Giants have taken Ohio State cornerback Eli Apple with the 10th pick overall in the NFL draft. Apple had 56 tackles and four interceptions in two seasons with the Buckeyes.

The Buffalo Bills have addressed a significant pass-rushing need by selecting Clemson pass rusher Shaq Lawson with the 19th pick in the NFL draft Thursday night. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 269 pounds, Lawson was a consensus All-American last season in which he led the nation with over twenty five tackles for a loss and twelve sacks.

The New York Jets have selected Ohio State linebacker Darron Lee with the 20th overall pick in the NFL draft. Lee had 12 sacks in two seasons with the Buckeyes as a speedy playmaker at linebacker. Jets coach Todd Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan said throughout the offseason that a key was improving the overall speed for the team, and their selection of Lee Thursday night addresses that need.

The second day of the NFL draft starts tonight at 7 p.m.

Raiders owner Mark Davis says he wants to move the team to Las Vegas and is willing to spend a half billion dollars as part of a deal for a new stadium in the city. He told officials in Las Vegas that $200 million of the half-billion would come from an NFL loan. The Raiders have a one-year lease in Oakland for next season, and Davis indicated the team would likely stay there until a new stadium is built.

Cardell Hayes has been indicted on a second-degree murder charge in the shooting death of former Saints defensive end Will Smith. Hayes was also indicted on a charge of attempted murder because police say he wounded Smith's wife after they got into a dispute when Hayes's Hummer hit Smith's Mercedes SUV from behind on April 9. The coroner said Smith was shot seven times in the back and once along his side, but Hayes' defense lawyer has said his client was not the aggressor and that a witness saw a gun in Smith's possession.

MLB:

In baseball, in the American League, Detroit bested Oakland 7-3 and Baltimore topped the White Sox 10-2.

In the National League, the Cubs defeated Milwaukee 7-2, Philadelphia blanked Washington 3-0, Arizona shut out St. Louis 3-0, and it was Miami over the Dodgers 5-3. The Pittsburgh at Colorado game was postponed due to rain.

In interleague play, Atlanta topped Boston 5-3.

NBA:

In the NBA, Atlanta beat Boston 104-92 to win the series 4-2.

NHL:

In the NHL, Washington edged Pittsburgh in overtime 4-3 to take the lead in the series 1-0.

NHL tough guy Colton Orr has retired after nine years in the league. Orr played for Boston, the New York Rangers and Toronto. He had a total of only 12 goals and 12 assists, but his fighting ability won him a regular job. For his career, he piled up 1,186 penalty minutes.

Boston's Patrice Bergeron, Anaheim's Ryan Kesler and Los Angeles' Anze Kopitar are the finalists for the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the NHL's top defensive forward. Members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association submitted ballots at the end of the regular season, with the top three designated finalists Thursday.

F1:

Nico Rosberg beat his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton in Friday's first practice session for the Russian Grand Prix, while Red Bull tested a new canopy to protect drivers from flying objects on the track.

Rosberg, who has won all three races this season and is 36 points ahead of Hamilton overall, led him by .722 seconds, with Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel third fastest and trailing by 1.048.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo did a brief stint at the start with the team's "aeroscreen" concept, which works like a reinforced windshield. The team released video of the screen deflecting a wheel at high speed.

The screen is a rival to a metal "halo" tested by Ferrari last month. Both concepts have come in for criticism over the way they look.

NCAA:

Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh has gotten his wish.

The NCAA Division I Board of Directors has scrapped a proposed ban on satellite camps. That rebuffs a request from powerhouse conferences in the South and clearing the way for coaches to hold and work at clinics far from their campuses this summer.

The council three weeks ago approved a ban prohibiting Bowl Subdivision coaches from holding or working at camps and clinics away from their schools. Harbaugh and his Michigan staff held camps in the South last summer, and he was among the first to praise the board's decision.

PGA:

Brian Stuard was the leader when the first round of the Zurich Classic was suspended. Stuard fired an 8-under 64 that included only 21 putts and no bogeys. He finished his final hole following a rain delay of nearly five hours. Retief Goosen is second after a 65.

LPGA:

Mi Jung Hur opened with a 5-under 66 to grab the first-round lead at the LPGA's Texas Shootout near Dallas. Gerina Piller is in a three-way tie for second with Eun-Hee Ji and So Yeon Ryu at minus-4.
