Sports Report: Winston Gets Overall No. 1 Pick In NFL Draft; Giants, Jets, Pats Nab Tackles

NHL:

In the NHL playoffs, Washington topped the Rangers 2-1 to take a 1-0 series lead and it was Anaheim over Calgary 6-1 giving the Ducks a 1-0 series lead.

NBA:

In the NBA playoffs, Chicago beat Milwaukee 120-66 to send the Bulls to round 2, series ended 4-2, and it was the Clippers over San Antonio 102-96 to tie the series at 3 games apiece.

NFL:

In the first round of the NFL Draft, Florida State Quaterback Jameis Winston was the overall number one pick from Tampa Bay, Oregon Quarterback Marcus Mariota went second to Tennessee, the Jets had 6th and picked up Southern California DT Leonard Williams, the Giants added OT Ereck Flowers of Miami with the 9th pick, and the Patriots picked up Texas DT Malcom Brown for the 32nd pick. The draft continues today into the weekend.

Former NFL star Plaxico Burress has been indicted on criminal charges related to a New Jersey tax payment. The former wide receiver with the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants and New York Jets was charged last week with willful failure to pay a state tax and issuing a bad check or electronic funds transfer.

UConn will have a new look on the football field next season. The school unveiled its new uniforms this week, the second image change in three years. This time, UConn has removed the Husky logo from the crown of the helmet, moving it instead to the side. A small outline of the state is now on the front of the helmet, and a large blue strip runs down its center. The word "UConn" also been dropped from the jerseys.

Boxing:

Tomorrow in boxing, Manny Pacquiao will take on Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas at 8 p.m.

MLB:

In baseball, in the National League, Washington bested the Mets 8-2,  St. Louis tripled up Philadelphia 9-3, and Cincinnati beat Atlanta 5-1.

In the American League, Toronto topped Cleveland 5-1, the Angels bested Oakland 6-5, Minnesota crushed the White Sox 12-2, Kansas City won against Detroit 8-1, and it was Houston over Seattle 3-2 in 10 innings. The Yankees see Boston tonight at 7:10 p.m. at Fenway Park.

Golf:

Masters champion Jordan Spieth (speeth) was among Thursday's winners in the World Match Play Championship in San Francisco. Spieth cruised to a 4 and 3 win over Matt Every.

Spieth, top-seeded Rory McIlroy, Gary Woodland and Bubba Watson are all 2-0 and face elimination matches. Rickie Fowler and John Senden have won their groups and next play what amounts to a practice round in the middle of a tournament.

Horse Racing:

Stanford has been scratched from the Kentucky Derby, moving Frammento into the 20-horse field for Saturday's race. Trainer Todd Pletcher says that Stanford would skip the Derby and run in a future race. All horses outside of Stanford's assigned No. 11 post will move inside one position; Frammento will break from the No. 20 spot. The lineup change means 5-2 favorite American Pharoah will break from the No. 17.
