Sheila Heti is a philosopher of modern experience, and she has reimagined what a book can hold. In her latest, Pure Colour, she presents a contemporary bible, an atlas of feeling, and an absurdly funny guide to the great (and terrible) things about being alive.

Davóne Tines is an operatic bass-baritone, who originated leading roles in the world premieres of operas including Matthew Aucoin's “Crossing,” John Adams' “Girls of the Golden West,” and Terence Blanchard's “Fire Shut Up in My Bones.”

Even his setups are funny, like this: “There was a taxidermy kiwi at a store in London.” Or this: “Everybody in the family convinced the youngest child that if she was naked, she was invisible.” Funny, a bit cruel, and entirely delightful.
