Union Coach Rick Bennett Suspended Two Games For Saturday's Brawl

Union College has suspended hockey coach Rick Bennett two games for his role in Saturday's brawl that followed a 2-1 loss to RPI at Times Union Center. The fight started after the final horn sounded on RPI's victory, which snapped a 10-game losing streak Union.

The fight also resulted in suspensions for Union center Eli Lichtenwald, Union defenseman Mat Bodie, RPI center Mike Zalewski and RPI defenseman Luke Curadi, all of whom received game disqualifications for fighting.

In the NHL, Rick Nash scored for the fifth straight game, and the New York Rangers used a four-goal second period to beat the New Jersey Devils 7-3 outside at Yankee Stadium.

Elsewhere it was Florida over Detroit 5-4 in a shootout. Winnipeg defeated Chicago 3-1. Edmonton crushed Nashville 5-1 and Vancouver beat Phoenix 5-4 in overtime.

Moving over to the NBA, the Brooklyn Nets beat the Boston Celtics 85-79 as Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett returned to their former home court for the first time since being traded last July.

New York had a 110-103 victory over the Lakers. Miami beat San Antonio 113-101. New Orleans defeated Orlando 100-92. It was Phoenix over Cleveland 99-90. Dallas won against Detroit 116-106. Denver topped Sacramento 125-117 and Portland fell to Golden State 103-88.

In college basketball, Siena won 64-56 against the Fairfield Stags. Junior guard Rob Poole scored 19 points and made six straight free throws in the final 30 seconds.

Top-ranked Arizona defeated Utah 65-56 and No. 13 UMass beat Fordham 90-52.

In women’s college basketball, No. 1 UConn snatched an 81-53 victory over South Florida.

Finally, the Broncos and Seahawks have touched down in New Jersey for next Sunday's Super Bowl at the Meadowlands.

And in the Pro Bowl it was the NFC over the AFC 22-21.
