Train Derails In North Hoosick, NY

Facebook: Hoosick Fire Department

Emergency officials say they don’t believe there are any leaks after propane and grain railcars derailed in North Hoosick, New York Wednesday night.

Jay Wilson, Director of Public Safety for Rensselaer County, spoke at a press conference this morning carried by WNYT-TV.

“The way these cars are laying, we can’t see that bottom belly of that car,” Wilson said. “So we don’t believe there is a leak. Monitoring has not detected anything. We are pretty comfortable that there is no leak, but until we can confirm that – we start moving those cars up so we can get a visual inspection – we’d feel a little more comfortable.”

Vermont Rail System says the 79-car train was moving at about five miles an hour leaving the interchange headed for Rutland, Vermont. Saying it’s too early to speculate about what caused the derailment, company Vice President Selen Hougton said Vermont Rail System hopes to start righting the railcars Friday night and then begin track repairs.

Two homes nearby remain evacuated.
