The Yankees stormed back from a 4-0, eighth-inning deficit to beat the Athletics, 5-4. The Yanks scored three times in the eighth before Brett Gardner and pinch-hitter Mike Ford unloaded solo homers off Liam Hendriks to give New York the rubber match of the three-game set. A's left-hander Sean Manaea pitched one-hit ball over five innings in his first start since shoulder surgery last September.

Scott Kingery delivered a tiebreaking, three-run double off Jeurys Familia in the eighth inning to give the Phillies a 5-2 win over the Mets in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Brad Miller also homered to help Philadelphia pull within 2 ½ games of the Cubs for the second NL wild card. Pete Alonso belted his 43rd home run and tied the game with a bases-loaded walk before the Mets stayed four games out of a wild-card slot.

Xander Bogaerts was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBIs to send Boston past the Angels, 4-3. J.D. Martinez also went deep for the Red Sox, who went 6-2 on their road trip and have won 11 of their last 15 to get within five games of the second AL wild card. David Price came off the injured list and worked two scoreless innings in his first start for the Red Sox since Aug. 4.

Ryan Zimmerman celebrated his return from the injured list by slamming one of Washington's four home runs in a 9-3 rout of the Marlins. Zimmerman was reinstated Sunday after missing 36 games with Plantar Fasciitis in his right foot. Anthony Rendon, Juan Soto and Yan Gomes also homered to help the Nationals complete a sweep.

Justin Verlander has become just the sixth pitcher in major league history to toss at least three no-hitters, and the first to do it twice as a visitor in the same ballpark. Verlander threw a season-high 120 pitches and faced just one batter over the minimum in tossing a gem in the Houston Astros’ 2-0 win at Toronto. He didn’t allow a base-runner after Cavan Biggio worked out a one-out walk in the first inning. Verlander struck out 14 and completed the fourth no-hitter in the majors this season by retiring Bo Bichette on a grounder to third baseman Abraham Toro. It was a fitting end to the game since Toro broke a scoreless tie with a two-run homer in the ninth. The gem comes eight years after Verlander no-hit the Blue Jays in Toronto and 12 years after his first no-hitter. The 36-year-old also improved to 17-5 this season and lowered his ERA to 2.56.

In MLB news, major league batters broke the monthly home run record for the third time this year and are on pace to shatter the season mark with weeks to spare, part of a season in which strikeouts also are occurring at an unprecedented rate. Batters hit 1,228 home runs hit in the majors in August, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. That topped the 1,142 in June and 1,135 in May. The New York Yankees hit a big league record of 74 homers in August — the previous mark for any month was 58 by Baltimore in May 1987 and Seattle in May 1999. Minnesota set the season record Saturday with 27 games remaining.

The Yankees recalled outfielder Clint Frazier from Triple-A more than two months after sending him down amid a roster crunch.

The Nationals reinstated closer Sean Doolittle from the 10-day injured list and activated right-hander Jeremy Hellickson from the 60-day injured list.

Dodgers rookie pitcher Dustin May left the game against the Diamondbacks after being hit on the right side of the head by a line drive. The 21-year-old May was down for a few minutes in obvious pain before sitting up and eventually walking off the field.

The Brewers have designated Jeremy Jeffress for assignment after the reliever went 3-4 with a 5.02 ERA this year.

The Marlins have reinstated right-handed pitchers José Ureña and Tayron Guerrero from the injured list, along with infielder Miguel Rojas.

TENNIS

Serena Williams’ bid for a seventh U.S. Open title and a record-tying 24th Grand Slam just got a little easier. The eighth-seeded Williams has reached the quarterfinals by beating No. 22 seed Petra Martic, 6-3, 6-4 despite an ankle issue. Williams appeared to be cruising along to a straightforward victory when she took an awkward step while up at the net for a volley. She tumbled to the ground and sat there, cross-legged, right in the middle of Arthur Ashe Stadium for a few moments.

Her competition got thinner with losses by second seed Ash Barty and No. 3 Karolina Pliskova in the fourth round. Barty was a 6-2, 6-4 loser to 18th-ranked Wang Qiang and Pliskova fell to No. 16 Johanna Konta, 6-7, 6-3, 7-5. Fifth seed Elina Svitolina rolled into the quarters with a 7-5, 6-4 win over No. 10 Madison Keys.

On the men’s side, third seed Roger Federer cruised through his second straight easy victory by beating David Goffin in 79 minutes, 6-2, 6-2, 6-0 to move into his 13th quarterfinal at Flushing Meadows. The five-time U.S. Open champion continues his quest for a record 21st Grand Slam tournament title. He will next face No. 78-ranked Grigor Dimitrov, who downed Alex de Minaur 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. Daniil Medvedev also advanced to the quarters with a four-sets win over Dominik Koepfer.

Steelers veteran cornerback Joe Haden has agreed to a new three-year, $32 million contract that will keep him in Pittsburgh through the 2021 season. Haden was in the final year of a three-year deal he signed with Pittsburgh after being released by the Browns on the eve of the 2017 season.

Linebacker Kiko Alonso has been traded by the Dolphins to the Saints for linebacker Vince Biegel. The trade was the latest payroll-cutting move by the Dolphins as they rebuild under first-year coach Brian Flores. Alonso was due to make $6.5 million this year.

The Bears have signed Pro Bowl offensive lineman Cody Whitehair to a five-year contract extension through the 2024 season. ESPN reported that it was worth $52.5 million and includes $27.5 million guaranteed. Whitehair was in the last season of his four-year rookie contract.

The Chargers do not intend to extend holdout running back Melvin Gordon's contract until after the season. General manager Tom Telesco said during a conference call on Sunday that the team has suspended contract talks with the regular season one week away.

The Seahawks have finalized their trade to acquire standout pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney from Houston. They sent two players and a 2020 third-round pick to the Texans.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Quarterback Jalen Hurts was outstanding in his Oklahoma debut. Hurts passed for three touchdowns and ran for three more as the fourth-ranked Sooners rolled past Houston 49-31. He completed 13 of 15 passes for 174 yards and rushed 11 times for 128 yards to help Oklahoma build a 21-10 halftime lead. Hurts posted 508 total yards in his first game since transferring from Alabama.

NASCAR

Erik Jones held off Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch over the final 50 laps to win the rain-delayed Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. The 23-year-old Jones passed Kyle Larson for the lead at Darlington Raceway and held strong through a final series of green flag pit stops for his second career win. Busch led the most laps at 118, despite starting from the back because of an engine switch. Busch looked like he'd end in second before hitting the wall on the next-to-last lap and dropping to third. Larson was second. Kevin Harvick was fourth and Brad Keselowski fifth.

F1

Charles Leclerc just held off Lewis Hamilton to win the Belgian Grand Prix from the pole position, securing the first victory of his Formula One career and ending Ferrari's long wait for a win. Hamilton was within one second of Leclerc on the final lap, but the 21-year-old from Monaco held his nerve. Hamilton extended his championship lead because his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas was third, finishing ahead of Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel.

LPGA

Australia's Hannah Green overcame a three-shot deficit with a final round 5-under 67 Sunday to win the Portland Classic.
