WORLD SERIES:

In the World Series, Kansas City owns a 2-0 lead after johnny Cueto tossed a neat two-hitter in a 7-1 rout of the New York Mets. The right-hander didn't allow a hit after Lucas Duda's RBI single gave the Mets a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning.

The Kansas City Royals say pitcher Edinson Volquez plans to rejoin the team when the World Series shifts to New York.

Volquez was back home in the Dominican Republic on Wednesday for the funeral of his father. His dad died Tuesday, hours before Volquez started Game 1 in Kansas City against the Mets. Royals manager Ned Yost said Wednesday that he expects Volquez will ready to pitch Game 5 at Citi Field.

Volquez pitched six effective innings in the opener, and the Royals wound up winning 5-4 in the 14th. Game 2 was Wednesday night.

NBA:

In the NBA, Boston beat Philadelphia 112-95, New York bested Milwaukee 122-97, Chicago beat Brooklyn 115-100, Toronto won against Indiana 106-99, Miami topped Charlotte 104-94, Washington beat Orlando 88-87, Detroit bested Utah 92-87, Cleveland defeated Memphis 106-76, Denver defeated Houston 105-85, Oklahoma City won against San Antonio 112-106, Dallas defeated Phoenix 111-95, the Clippers trumped Sacramento 111-104, Minnesota edged the Lakers 112-111, and it was Portland over New Orleans 112-94.

NHL:

In the NHL, Ottawa beat Calgary in a shootout 5-4, Pittsburgh beat Washington 3-1, and it was Nashville 2-1.

NFL:

On Thursday Night Football, Miami is in New England at 8:25.

Two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul has rejoined the New York Giants more than three months after losing a finger in a July 4 fireworks accident.

Coach Tom Coughlin says the 26-year-old Pierre-Paul is scheduled to go through calisthenics with the team Wednesday and then work with the medical staff to evaluate his injured right hand. His right index finger was amputated, his thumb was injured and his hand sustained burns in the accident.

Coughlin said that the Giants have no intention at this point of having Pierre-Paul play against the Saints in New Orleans on Sunday. However, he is considering having the six-year veteran make the trip to get him around a competitive environment.

Pierre-Paul was examined by team doctors Monday and given the OK to play. He made significant progress with his healing since being last examined by the team around Labor Day, Coughlin said.

Jets:

The New York Jets have released punter Steve Weatherford, four days after signing him in a pinch while he was in the middle of co-hosting a radio show.

Weatherford punted in the Jets' 30-23 loss at New England on Sunday as an emergency replacement for Ryan Quigley, who was unavailable with an infection in his right shin. Weatherford averaged just 40.3 yards, with a net of 30.8, on four punts. He had not punted in a game since being released by the Giants last month.

Quigley, who was taking antibiotics, apparently has healed enough for the team to part ways with Weatherford.

Weatherford, who played for the Jets from 2009-10, was in a commercial break Saturday on 98.7 ESPN New York when the team called and offered him a job.

Browns:

Browns coach Mike Pettine says quarterback Johnny Manziel has an "imminent" meeting scheduled with NFL investigators.

The league is looking into whether Manziel violated the league's personal conduct policy after an incident involving his girlfriend. According to a police report, Colleen Crowley accused Manziel of hitting her and pushing her head against his car's window during an argument.

Pettine says Manziel's status for Sunday's game against Arizona is uncertain.

The Browns may need the second-year pro as starter Josh McCown is suffering from a sore right shoulder

Marathon:

Former tennis pro James Blake is gearing up for his first marathon and says it's going to be a long race, much like the fight against police brutality.

Blake spoke Wednesday during a press event for the TCS New York City Marathon. The race comes less than two months after Blake was tackled outside a hotel and arrested by a New York Police Department officer in a case of mistaken identity.

Blake said Wednesday that recent images of a student being tossed from her desk by a South Carolina officer horrified him.

Blake was known for his speed on the tennis court. He will join 50,000 other runners at Sunday's marathon.

He is running for his foundation, which raises money for early detection cancer research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Hall of Fame Ring:

Cleveland Browns Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown and his long-lost championship ring will be reunited after nearly half a century.

Brown settled a lawsuit Wednesday he brought in Manhattan federal court against a memorabilia dealer. Brown says someone stole the ring from his Cleveland home in the late 1960s but he doesn't know who.

The 79-year-old Brown, walking with a cane, talked about the ring as he waited to meet with a magistrate judge. He said after the settlement that he felt good.

He says it means more than any of his trophies and awards because it represents the teamwork it took to win the league championship in 1964.

Brown scored 106 touchdowns in nine seasons before retiring at the peak of his career in 1965.

NCAA:

Minnesota football coach Jerry Kill has announced his retirement because of health reasons. Kill has epilepsy and had to take a leave of absence from the team in 2013 while dealing with seizures. His five-year record at Minnesota was 29-29 while overall he is 156-102.

Defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys has been named interim head coach.

The Golden Gophers host Michigan Saturday night.

FIFA:

FIFA sponsor Visa has threatened to cut its ties with the scandal-tarnished governing body of soccer if the credit card company isn't satisfied with reforms. A Visa executive appeared alongside representatives from McDonald's, Coca-Cola and Budweiser brewer Anheuser-Busch at a British parliamentary hearing into FIFA.
